Those of you who are still hanging on to an old BlackBerry OS devices (running anything earlier than BlackBerry 10 or BlackBerry 7.1) need to make final plans to say goodbye to your devices. As of January 4, 2022, those devices will no longer reliably support Phone Calls, SMS or 911 Emergency calls. BlackBerry also notes that WiFi and mobile data may also become unreliable, amongst a myriad of BlackBerry applications.
In addition to BlackBerry phones about to kick the bucket, the BlackBerry PlayBook is taking a final nose dive as it reaches end-of-life status. Anyone still using one of these devices (which were thankfully discontinued a year after their initial launch) might just be a sucker for punishment and should transition over to Android as soon as possible! *smirk*
All joking aside, if you are still relying on an original BlackBerry device as your daily or even occasional driver, you really must migrate to something more modern. With BlackBerry eventually becoming a software company and using Android as their base OS, most original BlackBerry users should feel reasonably at home.
The core highlight here is security. It’s important to make sure your device is always kept current with new OS releases and security updates. While it can be a hassle to do updates, it really is one of the most important ways to keep your devices safe and secure.
